Adapting with Age

The Internet has long been populated by middle-aged worker drones for business purposes and used for recreation by teens and the like. All in all, a younger crowd was enjoying the perks of cyberspace. That doesn't seem to be the case these days.

Joining those ranks now is the 'older generation.' The older generation is defined as people 55 and up and they are taking to the internet like a fish to water. They are perusing the net with the same ease as their younger counterparts and frequenting sites that were typically seen as dominated by whipper-snappers.

Sites such as Craigslist.com, MySpace.com and Photobucket.com have all seen a radical increase in users from that age demographic. Web usage in that age category has skyrocketed up 24% from this time last year. Some of the most popular categories are multi-media, blogs and photo sites. They are spending a lot of time on sites that rely heavily on the user-generated content.

Marketing and advertising firms would be wise to take this information into consideration when creating their ads, content for a site and incentives to offer.
